Oral Health Data
Surveillance
Division of Oral Health is placing a priority on a state-based oral health surveillance system. This priority is captured in one of the goals of the state’s oral health improvement plan developed by stakeholders and partners. We are hopeful that this system will come to full fruition in the next 12-18 months. Surveillance is the ongoing, systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of data regarding a health-related event for use in public health action to reduce morbidity and mortality, and to improve health. Surveillance is a process that provides information for action. Three key aspects of a surveillance system highlight its importance: data collection, timely dissemination of findings, and putting data to action. Data disseminated by a public health surveillance system can be used for immediate public health action, program planning and evaluation, and formulating research hypotheses. Surveillance data can be a valuable tool to help target scarce resources, show progress of stated objectives and is a key public health assessment activity. Below are sources for oral health and health related data important to monitor access to oral health services, community water fluoridation status, and utilization of dental services by the populations of Illinois.
